SPINKS RECORDS GALORE IN HONG KONG - AUCTIONS SURPASSING HK100 MILLION MARK - 延陵牧星 - 牧星谭邮--肖宏的博客
Auction: 16012 - Meiso Mizuhara, The Exhibition Collections, The Chinese Customs Post
 Lot: 1720
China
1897
Revenue Surcharges
The Small One Dollar
$1 on 3c. red [2] part to large part original gum with part hinge remainders at top. Fresh, bright colour on white paper; there is small patch at the top of the stamp which shows slightly greater transparency. It is difficult to tell whether this is a slight thinning of the paper or a small area where oil from the hinges has affected the paper. This does not detract from its magnificent appearance. A very good example of this legendary rarity.
There is a dot joining the central parts of the character one.
provenance: McCleave
W.K.Gee, 1957
references: Number A-19 in Huang Kuang Sheng, A Treatise on the extant copies of the Small One Dollar, 1975
Type III 8 in The Revenue Surcharges China 1897, 1987
These two stamps form a horizontal pair from the top left corner of the pane
Sold for HK$5,200,000

Auction: 16012 - Meiso Mizuhara, The Exhibition Collections, The Chinese Customs
 Post Lot: 1682
 China
1878-83 The Large Dragon Issue
Foreign Post Office Covers
United States Post Office
1878 (20 Dec.) neat envelope from Warren, U.S.A. to Shanghai bearing 1875 5c. Taylor tied by the despatch duplex. The 5ca. inland mail is made up of 1ca. deep green [18] and [19] with 3ca. brownish red [15] with right margin (trimmed perfs. at foot) tied by " customs/shanghai" 1879 (6 Feb.) c.d.s. in red with a further, clear strike on the lower corner.
A delightful and very important cover with many desirable attributes including being the earliest incoming cover bearing Large Dragon stamps and the only 5ca. rate cover with 1ca. and 3ca. franking.
Believed to be the only incoming U.S. Plus Large Dragon combination cover
An exhibition item of the highest calibre
provenance: Warren G. Attwood, October 1952
literature: James Whang Large Drgon covers, number 5
The 5ca. rate was employed in 1878-79. Richard Pratt records thirteen covers, eight being internal covers addressed to Messrs Hall & Holtz. The 3ca. and 5ca. rates seemed to have been used at the same time and it is still unclear the exact reason for the difference though it is believed that the 5ca. represents the inland registered rate
There are eleven Large Dragon covers relating to the U.S.A., only two of these are incoming
J.F. Oiesen joined the I.M.C. in July 1877

1897 Revenue Surcharges
Unoverprinted
3c. red in a top margin block of four [7-8/17-18], lightly mounted with full original gum; there are a couple of small thin spots where old hinges have been removed which are confined to [7] and [18]. A beautiful and fresh block in a very rich colour and a worthy addition to any collection or exhibit
provenance: Sir Percival David, March 1975
literature: The Revenue Surcharges of China 1897 (vol. I), page 2 (illustrated)
Approximately eighty unsurcharged 3c. stamps have been recorded. We record only three blocks of four and two blocks of six. A larger block has been discovered but the condiotion of this is very poor

1885-88 The Small Dragon Issue
Covers
French Post Office
1888 (23 Jan.) opened-out envelope to Paris bearing, on the reverse, 1ca. green on yellowish, 3ca. lilac (with interpanneau margin at left) used in combination with Large Dragon 5ca. bright orange-yellow [18] with wide margins, cancelled by two strikes of the Peking seal in grey-blue with a fine strike of the "i.g. of customs/peking" type 2 despatch c.d.s. (with serif letters) alongside, with Customs Shanghai (7.2) c.d.s. and the adhesives tied by two Paris c.d.s. (8.3); the address side with France 25c. tied by "shang-hai/chine" c.d.s. with "modane a paris" transit in red. There is a tiny fault at the top of the envelope, otherwise exceptionally fresh and fine.
Paying the 9ca. rate to Europe.
A cover of considerable beauty and importance. A magnificent and very rare three-colour combination of first and second issues. Very few Large and Small Dragon combination covers are known, this being even more desirable as it includes the wide margin 5ca.
An exhibition item if the highest calibre
provenance: Sir Percival David, October 1974
This Customs Peking datestamp was only employed between January 1888 and April 1889
Sold
for HK$1,500,000
